Why I Recommend a Dental Checkup Before the Holidays

The holidays are busy, and that’s exactly why I like to remind patients to get a dental checkup before the season hits full speed. If something is starting to go wrong, it’s much easier to handle it now than to wait until you’re in the middle of travel plans, family gatherings, and packed schedules.

A simple checkup can prevent a small issue from becoming a holiday emergency. It can also give you peace of mind going into the new year, especially if you’ve had any sensitivity, bleeding gums, or “I think I chipped something” moments lately.

Quick reasons I recommend a pre-holiday visit:

  • Catch early cavities before they turn into toothaches.
  • Address gum inflammation before it becomes persistent bleeding or swelling.
  • Check old fillings and crowns before hard holiday foods find the weak spot.
  • Evaluate sensitivity before hot drinks and cold weather make it miserable.
  • Get a professional cleaning so plaque and tartar aren’t building up quietly.
  • Make a plan for anything you’ve been putting off, with no pressure.

The holiday problem: timing

If a tooth starts hurting on a weekend, during travel, or when offices are closed, people often end up in urgent care or trying to manage pain until they can be seen. That’s stressful, and it’s not how I want you spending your time.

A checkup now is a preventative move. Even if everything looks great, you’ll leave knowing you’re in good shape.

Signs you should come in before the holidays

If any of these sound familiar, I’d rather see you sooner than later:

  • Tooth sensitivity that’s new or getting worse
  • Bleeding when you brush or floss
  • Bad breath that keeps coming back
  • A rough edge on a tooth or filling that feels chipped
  • Pain when chewing (even if it’s mild)
  • Swelling, tenderness, or gum soreness
  • Food packing between the same teeth every time
  • A crown, bridge, or filling that feels loose or “different”

Even small symptoms can point to something that’s easier to fix early.

What a checkup helps me do for you

When you come in, my goal is simple: find problems early, keep you comfortable, and help you avoid surprises.

Depending on what you need, a visit may include:

  • An exam to check teeth, gums, bite, and any existing dental work
  • X-rays when appropriate to look for issues you can’t see
  • A professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar
  • Targeted advice for home care based on what I’m seeing

If something needs attention, we’ll talk through your options and timing. Sometimes the best plan is “not urgent, schedule after the holidays.” Sometimes it’s “let’s handle this now so you’re not dealing with it later.”

FAQs

Is a checkup really necessary if nothing hurts?
Yes. Many cavities and gum problems start quietly. Waiting for pain usually means the issue is already further along.

What if I’m worried you’ll find a lot wrong?
I get that. My approach is practical and calm: I’ll explain what I see, what matters most, and what can wait. You stay in control of decisions.

If I only have time for one thing, should I do the exam or the cleaning?
If you can do both, that’s ideal. If you truly can only do one, I usually recommend starting with the exam so we can identify any concerns and plan appropriately.

I’ve been told I have gum issues. Is this the right time to come in?
Absolutely. Holidays often mean more sugary snacks and less routine. Getting your gums evaluated and cleaned before the season can help prevent flare-ups.

I chipped a tooth but it doesn’t hurt. Should I still come in?
Yes. Small chips can turn into bigger breaks, especially during holiday eating. We can smooth it, repair it, or protect it depending on what happened.

How often should I be getting checkups?
Most people do well with routine visits every six months, but some patients benefit from a shorter schedule depending on gum health, cavity risk, or past dental work.

If you’re hoping to get in before the holidays, call us now while we’re still open through December 24th.
