Why teeth can still move
Teeth can shift over time, even after well-planned orthodontic treatment. Changes in retainer wear, a retainer that no longer fits well, or normal settling of the bite can all affect alignment. There is no single retainer schedule that fits everyone, so timing is usually individualized.
What a retainer follow-up visit checks
A follow-up visit can check whether the retainer still seats properly, whether it shows wear, cracks, or warping, and whether cleaning habits have led to buildup, staining, or damage. It also gives the dentist a chance to compare the retainer with your teeth and look for small movement early.
