CDCP Questions to Ask Before a Family Dental Appointment

If your family is planning a dental visit under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), a few questions before you book can help prevent confusion later. The goal is to confirm active coverage, whether the office participates, what needs approval, and what you may still owe.

1) Is the CDCP coverage active for this person?

CDCP eligibility is not automatic, and coverage can change. Before you book, ask whether the patient has active CDCP coverage right now. If you are booking for more than one family member, check each person’s status.

A simple question is: “Is this person’s CDCP coverage active today, and do you need anything from us before the visit?”

2) Does this office participate in CDCP and direct bill Sun Life?

Participation in CDCP is voluntary. Ask whether the office accepts CDCP patients and whether it can direct bill Sun Life for covered care.

If the office does not direct bill, ask how payment works and whether you should expect to pay anything at the visit.

3) Which services are covered, and which need preauthorization?

CDCP does not cover every service the same way. Some treatments may be covered only after preauthorization or another review, and some services may not be covered.

Ask: “Which parts of this plan are covered now, and which ones need approval before we start?”

That matters because the treatment plan and the coverage decision are not always identical.

4) What out-of-pocket costs could still apply?

Even when CDCP helps with the bill, families may still have co-payments or other amounts to pay themselves. Ask for an estimate before treatment begins so you know the likely total.

  • What part of this visit is likely covered?
  • What amount might we still owe?
  • Are there any costs if we choose a different option?

5) What if the treatment plan changes after the exam?

This is a good question to ask before anyone sits down in the chair. If the exam leads to a different plan, ask whether the estimate changes, whether updated approval is needed, and whether any new costs apply before treatment starts.

A simple follow-up question is: “If the plan changes after the exam, do we need a new estimate or new approval before moving ahead?”

A calm next step for Hamilton families

If you want a practical next step in downtown Hamilton, start with Excel Dental’s downtown Hamilton page and bring your CDCP details when you book. The main questions are the same for a child’s visit, a teen checkup, or a family appointment: Is coverage active, does the office participate, what needs approval, and what may still be billed?
