Cracked Tooth or Broken Filling: What to Do Before Your Appointment

What a cracked tooth or broken filling can mean

A cracked tooth or a broken filling can range from a small chip to a deeper problem. Some people feel pain when biting. Others notice cold sensitivity, a rough edge, or very little discomfort at all. Symptoms can help guide urgency, but they do not tell the full story.

If a filling has come loose or broken, the tooth underneath needs to be checked and may need to be restored or replaced. If the tooth itself is cracked, the dentist will examine how far the crack appears to go before discussing next steps.

First steps before your appointment

  • Chew on the other side of your mouth.
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, or very hot or cold foods if they make the tooth more sensitive.
  • If you have a loose fragment or a piece of filling, save it in a clean container and bring it to the visit.
  • Rinse gently with water and brush carefully around the area if it is comfortable.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of the face if the tooth or jaw feels sore or swollen.

What to avoid

Try not to keep testing the tooth by chewing on it. Do not pick at the crack or try home repair hacks. The safest approach is to protect the area and let the dentist examine it.

When same-day dental care is more urgent

Call sooner if you have significant pain, swelling, a sharp edge cutting your tongue or cheek, or if the problem started after a fall, hit, or other trauma.

Get urgent medical help if facial swelling is spreading, or if you develop fever, trouble swallowing, or any breathing changes.

When the next available appointment may be okay

Some small cracks and broken fillings can wait briefly if there is no swelling, no major pain, and no recent injury. Even then, it is still smart to book soon, because symptoms can change.
